The Gottman Relational Therapy Method

The Gottman Method is a unique, research-based approach to couples therapy. It involves a thorough assessment of the relationship, which then informs the therapeutic techniques that are used in the couples counseling sessions. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to improve communication, remove barriers that create stagnancy in the relationship, and increase intimacy between the partners. There are the general steps in the process:

  • Assessment - couples counseling begins with a joint session which is then followed by individual sessions with each of the partners. Each partner also fills out a questionnaire about their relationship and the challenges they’re facing.

  • Therapeutic Framework - the couples counselor discusses the frequency and duration of the sessions, as well as goals for the therapy. 

  • Therapeutic Interventions - the primary goal of couples therapy is to improve and strengthen the relationship, and the Gottman Method focuses on three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and creation of shared meaning. Through couples therapy, the partners learn to replace negative patterns with more positive interactions, while at the same time healing past hurt.

The Gottman Method has helped all types of couples, including couples in same-sex relationships. Even couples who believe that they have a “normal” amount of conflict in their relationship may benefit from Gottman Couples therapy.
