Anxiety Symptoms

Recognizing the symptoms of anxiety is the first step toward understanding and managing your feelings.

  • Persistent worrying

  • Obsessive or intrusive thoughts

  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating

  • Pacing or restlessness

  • Muscle tension, trembling, sweating

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Nausea or digestive problems

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

  • Irritability, frustration, despair

You don’t necessarily need to be experiencing most of all of these symptoms to be suffering from anxiety. Even just having three or more of these symptoms may indicate that you have an anxiety-related issue.

What is Anxiety?

What is Anxiety?

It’s almost impossible not to experience anxiety at some point or another in our stressful and hectic lives. Family, careers, finances, health problems, school, life adjustments, and many other factors can contribute to our stress and anxiety. Anxiety comes in all shapes and sizes.

Is your mind always on the GO? Do you find it impossible to relax? Do you feel that your anxiety interferes with your sleeping patterns, eating habits, day-to-day functioning, job, or school activities? Have your relationships suffered because you had to cancel plans? Do you experience tension in your body, pressure in your chest, seemingly irrational worries or intrusive thoughts, or routine irritability or frustration? If so, you may be suffering from anxiety.

Overcoming Anxiety

You can manage anxiety effectively at home by incorporating simple practices into your daily routine. Exercise, such as a walk around Wrightsville Beach, boosts endorphins and reduces stress. Maintaining healthy sleeping and eating habits is crucial, as a well-functioning body can lessen anxiety. Relaxation techniques, like deep breathing and visualization, can calm your mind and help you cope with stress naturally. While these strategies can be beneficial for mild to moderate anxiety, it's important to seek professional treatment if your symptoms intensify.

At Clarity Counseling Center, our anxiety therapists use evidence-based treatment methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that can significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms of anxiety in a relatively short period of time. Your anxiety counselor in Wilmington will work with you to help you understand the underlying causes for your anxieties and fears, as well as provide you with the tools you’ll need to learn to relax, regain some control in your life, and begin moving forward with confidence and optimism. In anxiety therapy, you can expect to receive psychoeducation about anxiety, gain more understanding of your anxiety through self-monitoring, explore relaxation strategies, learn strategies to take control of your thoughts and discover problem-solving tools for facing your fears and anxieties.

Making Anxiety Therapy Work For You

Like any mental health issue, there is no quick fix for anxiety. Overcoming anxiety takes time and commitment, and our team here at Clarity Counseling Center can help. Much of anxiety therapy involves facing your fears, rather than avoiding them, and sometimes counseling can make you feel worse before you get better. The important thing is to stick with it, even when you’re feeling discouraged. The benefits of anxiety therapy come when you see it through.

You can also support your anxiety therapy through what you do outside of our counseling center, and our anxiety therapist will help give you tools to do that. To best cope with feelings of anxiety, you can:

Learn About Anxiety

Do your research! Read books about anxiety and understand the problem. While education alone won’t cure an anxiety disorder, it does help you understand yourself better and will support your anxiety therapy.

Cultivate Connections

Loneliness and isolation can make anxiety worse, and reaching out to others is a great way to help reduce anxiety. While it may be hard, sharing your worries with a trusted loved one or joining a support group can support you on your road to recovery.

Reduce Stress

While some stress is unavoidable, look for ways to minimize it in your life. Set boundaries. Avoid people who make you anxious and say no to extra responsibilities that you don’t have the bandwidth to take on. Make time for fun and relaxation throughout your day.

Build Healthy Habits

Physical activity is proven to help relieve tension and anxiety, so try to make time for exercise. It doesn’t have to be anything super intense, just taking a walk on your lunch break can improve your mood. Try not to use foreign substances to cope with your symptoms, and reduce or eliminate caffeine and nicotine, which can increase anxiety.
