Coping with Anxiety during COVID-19

Have your thoughts been racing lately? Feel a pit in your stomach? Quarantine got you worrying more than usual?

These are normal reactions to the abnormal situation we, as a world, are currently navigating. The brain is actually designed to monitor for danger, and it lets us know about it through these signs. The fear and anxiety the COVID-19 pandemic is creating, both internally and externally, may feel overwhelming; however, it is important to know that you are not alone in these feelings. In fact, the Center for Disease Control anticipated a significant spike in anxiety after the onset of COVID-19.

Resiliency is defined as awareness + action. By this time, you are most likely aware that you are feeling uncomfortable, so now what do you do about it? This is where the action comes in. Here are some things you can do to help relieve some of the discomfort you are feeling.

  1. Maintain a ROUTINE – especially in the morning. This can help you start your day with a sense of normalcy.

  2. Fact check your THOUGHTS – Did you know not everything you think is true? Ask yourself if the thoughts you are telling yourself are actually true.

  3. BOUNDARIES – Give yourself a set time to consume COVID-19 information; maybe limit yourself to 30 minutes a day.

  4. CONNECT – Social distancing doesn’t mean social distancing! Invite friends and family to a virtual game night, happy hour, or dinner.

  5. Be GRATEFUL – I know this sounds counterintuitive, but gratitude actually increases happiness. Try writing down 3 things each day for which you are thankful.

  6. Stay physically ACTIVE – Get outside, go for a walk, do some hom-ga (home yoga ☺).

  7. Ask for HELP – The therapists at Clarity are trained and ready to help you navigate the anxiety of COVID-19 through Telehealth appointments!

  8. …and for goodness sake…WASH YOUR HANDS! This way, you’ll know you are doing your part to keep yourself and others safe.
