James “Jim” Heffernan, LCSWA

Jim is originally from New York, spending half of his life in Syracuse, and the other half in Brooklyn; however, he and his family are happy to now call Wilmington, NC home! He specializes in working with adults treating anxiety and depression of all kinds. He is also a specialist in trauma recovery. In sessions Jim is playful and curious with a strong sense of “I’ve got you” energy.

Jim’s treatment foundation is evidence-based and customized to fit each client’s individual needs. Jim pulls from therapeutic techniques rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Narrative Therapy.

Jim is passionate about his work with adults who have experienced trauma of all kinds. Whether from a single event or years of ongoing stress, trauma can show up as worry in ways like poor sleep, feeling on edge, or disconnected from yourself and others. He knows talking about painful experiences isn’t easy but believes healing can bring relief, resilience, and hope. Jim meets each person as an individual and helps them find their own path toward peace, self-trust, and the life they want to live.

Jim specializes in therapy with adolescent and adult men who feel lost, disconnected, or unsure of who they are or where they are headed. Many of his clients experience low mood, self doubt, bottled up emotions, or anger that shows up in ways that strain relationships or daily life. Jim understands how pressure to “hold it together” and unspoken expectations around masculinity can leave people feeling stuck or alone. He helps clients build emotional awareness, express themselves in healthier ways, and challenge patterns that keep them disconnected so they can develop a stronger sense of self and more fulfilling relationships.

Jim excels working with individuals who feel overwhelmed by anxiety of all kinds. He’s got your back with it comes to more extreme physical signs of anxiety like tense muscles, racing thoughts, pounding heart, and even panic attacks. He helps clients trace their anxiety to its roots while also addressing the real-time situations that fuel it. Together they practice ways to calm an overactive mind, break unhelpful patterns, and regain a sense of steadiness and control in daily life.

Fun Fact: Jim is a multi-instrumentalist who can play guitar, drums, bass, and cello! He owned and operated a recording studio in Brooklyn for 15 years.
