6 Tips for Undergrads

How to Be a Successful Undergrad

College is an amazing yet anxiety-provoking environment. Balancing, school, work, relationship, and a social life can feel impossible. Wasn’t this supposed to be fun like Van Wilder? Many of our clients struggle to find a balance and remain feeling sane. Below are a few tips we hope help!

1) Go Easy on Yourself

Make learning your objective, not straight A’s. Whenever I received a bad grade on an assignment or missed class, I would beat myself up. It’s OK. Be easy on yourself and remember that you are not alone. If you are constantly struggling academically a therapist may be able to help with things like procrastination, test anxiety, organization, and study skills.

2) Have Fun

Of course, your studies should be your number one priority, but all work and no fun will have deteriorating effects on your mental health. Whether your idea of fun is waking up to watch the sunrise or eating pizza and watching a scary movie, allow yourself to relax. A temporary escape from the school stress can be reviving.

3) Talk to Your Professors

As scary as they are, I promise they’re there to help. Most of them actually enjoy speaking to you during their office hours, offering you advice on future endeavors, and counseling you on current issues in your classes, well most of them. Remember, their job is to teach and they truly want to see you succeed.

4) Learn to Life-Hack Studying

Learning is similar to building a house.  Learning isn’t instantaneous. It’s a process of exposures. If you need assistance refining your study process, talk with a therapist today about implementing study strategies to get you studying smarter, not harder.

5) Grow From Missteps

As long as you know where and how to look, failure can be a great teacher. Focus on the variables in your control. This may be your opportunity to become even better.

6) Connect, and Connect Often

Feeling socially connected is crucial to a successful and fun college journey! Connection happens differenly for everyone.  But joining a club, volunteering, taking acquaintances to friends are all great places to start!  As a bonus, volunteering looks amazing on your resume and offers an escape from classwork while contributing to your community.
